CEREC dental crown machine

Dr. Dunayer has two main priorities when treating his patients: to provide high-quality care, while also promoting patient comfort. To meet these high demands, his office invests in the most modern dental equipment, including CEREC technology, which allows for comfortable, convenient single-visit tooth restorations.

If you would like to learn how you can get attractive all-ceramic dental crowns with just one visit in Rockland County, please call (845) 627-7645 for an appointment with Dr. Mark Dunayer at B & D Dental Excellence – A Dental365 Company in West Nyack.

What is CEREC?

Short for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics, CEREC is a modern dental restoration tool that allows Dr. Dunayer to provide his patients with porcelain dental crowns in a short amount of time. Not very long ago, patients had to make multiple trips to the dentist for these procedures; however, thanks to a variety of computer-based technologies, such as CAD/CAM and 3D photography, CEREC can be used to complete the entire restorative process in just one visit.

The Process

In the past, crown fitting and creation took a substantial amount of time. These days, CEREC makes the entire process more accurate and efficient. When patients visit B & D Dental Excellence for a CEREC-based restorative treatment, they can expect the following:

  1. Exam and Preparation: Dr. Dunayer will examine the tooth and determine the appropriate preparation method. He’ll then prepare the tooth by removing decay.
  2. Optical Impression: Next, he will take a three-dimensional image of the tooth, which will be used to prepare your crown.
  3. Restoration Creation: Finally, Dr. Dunayer will use the CEREC machine to design and create your crown, which he will then use to replace your damaged tooth.

Everything happens right in the office. Instead of having to wear a temporary crown for several days while you wait for your lab-fabricated crown to find its way to the dental office; you’ll leave that very same day with an attractive new crown that blends in naturally with the rest of your teeth.

Big Benefits

CEREC fillings

CEREC is a valuable tool that allows Dr. Dunayer to meet his patients’ needs in a timelier manner; however, it does much more than that. One of the most beautiful things about CEREC restoration is that it offers just that: beauty. Instead of unsightly silver materials which stand out for all the wrong reasons, CEREC uses high quality, durable ceramic (porcelain) materials which are virtually undetectable from natural teeth. CEREC also requires less drilling, fewer injections and less time, making it an attractive solution for people with busy schedules who can’t afford to take off work multiple times to have a single tooth repaired.

CEREC crowns have been reported to be very successful. About 95% of CEREC crowns survive five years or more.

The Most Successful Fillings

In addition to dental crowns, CEREC can be used to make highly attractive and very durable ceramic fillings known as dental inlays and onlays. Studies have shown that these fillings are the most successful fillings in use today. One study compared CEREC fillings to half a dozen other types of fillings, including metal amalgam and gold, and they found that CEREC fillings had the lowest failure rates over the 15 years of the study. Here are the failure rates for all the filling types:

  • Glass ionomer fillings (7.7% failed)
  • Metal amalgam (3.3%)
  • Composite fillings (2.2%)
  • Composite inlays and onlays (2.0%)
  • Lab-made ceramic inlays and onlays (1.6%)
  • Gold inlays and onlays (1.2%)
  • CEREC inlays and onlays (1.1%)

That’s right, CEREC fillings had a 98.9% survival rating, better than gold. Combine that high success rate with the convenience and beauty of CEREC restorations, and you can see why they continue to become more popular with time.
