What Are CEREC Crowns?

CEREC, short for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics, does away with the pesky traditional impression system. Instead, using 3D photography, cosmetic dentist Dr. Mark Dunayer will create a 3D image of your mouth. Then, Dr. Dunayer and the CEREC system will create an exact digital model of your new crown. The CEREC machine, located in our office, 3D prints your new crown within the hour, and you’ll leave the office with your new permanent crown installed and fitting perfectly. Pretty cool, right? We think so, too.
How It Works
In the past, to create a new or replacement prosthesis that looked natural and felt comfortable, patients scheduled an appointment to get traditional impressions done. Patients would leave their dental office with a temporary crown. Temporary crowns could have problems. They might not fit right, which made them uncomfortable and might interfere with talking or eating. They might not look attractive. And sometimes they didn’t even last the short time until the new crown was ready. The new crown was made somewhere else, then shipped to the patient’s dental office. They would then schedule a second appointment to have the temporary crown swapped out for the permanent one. On top of all that, most patients required injections in order to get the crown fixed or replaced.
CEREC flips that entire system on its head. The 3D imaging tool communicates directly with our in-office 3D mill, and most of our patients can schedule their CEREC crown appointment over their lunch break. You’ll walk out with a new, perfectly custom-fitted and natural-looking crown after just one hour.
