Sleep problems don’t just cause frustration; they can kill. Studies have clearly demonstrated that inadequate sleep is tightly linked to deadly health issues, such as heart disease, diabetes and dementia. Now, new research indicates that sleep difficulties may also increase the risk of cancer in men.

Cause for Worry

A study appearing in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention suggests that insufficient sleep increases a man’s risk of developing prostate cancer. Conducted at the University of Iceland in Reykjavik, the research looked at a couple thousand men over a period of five years. By the end of the study, the researchers found that severe sleep problems were closely linked to prostate cancer; in fact, they ultimately determined that poor sleepers were three times more likely to develop this deadly disease.

More Bad News

This new research adds to a growing body of evidence that closely ties sleep problems with deadly medical issues. In response to these studies, a greater number of people are adopting healthier habits which promote better sleep. Unfortunately for sleep apneics, lifestyle changes probably won’t be enough.

Get Help Soon

If you have obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), it’s time to reach out for help. Dr. Dunayer offers his patients an effective sleep apnea treatment that creates a clear airway by adjusting the jaw. What’s more, this simple remedy promotes quiet, comfortable sleep, unlike CPAP treatments which can be worse than OSA, itself.

A Better Way

Despite its benefits, CPAP comes with unpleasant side-effects, such as loud noises, movement restrictions, claustrophobia and pressure sores. On the other hand, an oral sleep appliance relieves sleep apnea symptoms quietly; so you can enjoy peaceful, uninterrupted sleep on a nightly basis.
