You’ve probably heard of the Invisalign braces system whether it was on the T.V., radio, or word of mouth. Also sometimes known as invisible braces or clear braces, the Invisalign system is one of a kind that works to straighten the smile through the use of aligners that are meant to be undetectable. This means you can wear the aligners whenever and wherever. At the same time the aligners can be removed as required throughout the day. For example a busy professional may opt to remove his/her aligners during a speech or presentation. While this straightening system is a dream come true to many, it’s critical to note that not all patients who want straighter teeth are true candidates for invisible braces.
For example, invisible braces have proven ideal for patients who have a small amount of malocclusion and/or mild crowding. Patients with extensive problems in these areas can’t always get the straight smile that they want by using invisible braces. It is also more of a challenge to correct crossbites, overbites, and tooth rotation with invisible braces, so patients with these conditions may not see ideal results with invisible braces.
Patients who grind their teeth (bruxism) are also not encouraged to use Invisalign. Bruxism can cause a lot of damage to the aligners which can mean added costs if an aligner needs to be replaced. Invisalign may also not be suitable for those dental patients who are not willing to comply with the rules of the system. We have found that some patients take too much advantage of the fact that the aligners are removable. Though they can be removed they should still be worn for at least 20 hours a day to get the best results.
If you’re considering invisible braces, it’s vital that you first make sure you are a proper candidate for this particular straightening method. Though they are the most ideal and highly requested type of braces today, the fact is that not every patient is a good candidate for them.
